ELECTRIC LOCO SHED - VISAKHAPATNAM


The electric loco shed - Visakhapatnam was Commissioned in 1982 with a capacity of 35 locos to run trains for iron ore transportation from the Bailadilla mines to Visakhapatnam over the Kirandul-Kottavalasa (KK) line comprising two ghat sections with 1,271 bridges and 58 tunnels.

The electric loco shed here has become the Indian Railways' biggest, with its holding capacity increasing to 167 locomotives.

In 1988, a fleet of state-of-the-art 18 WAG-6 type locomotives of 6000 HP, made in Sweden and Japan, was introduced to meet the ever increasing iron ore traffic.

Recently, 23 WAM-4 locomotives were transferred to Vizag from Bhusawal and Ghaziabad to meet the requirements of coaching services on the main line.
