WALTAIR DIVISION AT A GLANCE
Waltair Division is one of the important divisions in East Coast Railway - the Sun Raise Zone of Indian Railways. Its jurisdiction extends over a length of 1,052 route kms., covering three states viz., Andhra Pradesh(A.P.), Orissa and Chhattisgarh.

In addition, there was a erstwhile popular Narrow Gauge (NG) line, with a stretch of 91 kms., extending from Naupada (A.P) to Gunupur (Orissa) which is under gauge conversion to BROAD GAUGE.
The divisional headquarters is situated at Visakhapatnam - the City of Destiny , which is quite well known for its scenic hills, sea-shores, industries etc.  During last two decades of rapid industrialization in and around the Port city of Vizag, Waltair Division has all along been fulfilling the ever-increasing transportation needs of this greater industrial city.

Waltair Division is a major freight carrier for important Public Sectors like :- 
1.     Visakhapatnam Port Trust (V.P.T.)
2.     Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (R.I.N.L.)
3.     National Mineral Development Corporation (N.M.D.C.)
4.     National Aluminium Company (N.A.L.C.O.)
5.     Indian Oil Corporation (I.O.C.)
6.     Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (B.P.C.L.)
7.    Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (H.P.C.L.)
Several industries including M/s NMDC, VSPS, ESSAR, NALCO, VIKRAM ISPAT, COROMANDEL FERTILIZER, J.K. PAPER MILLS, MAA Mahamaya, CONCAST, NCS Sugars, Varalaxmi sugars, Hindustan Zinc, Seva Paper Mill, BALCO, VEDANTA etc., are also covered under freight operations.

The important commodities originating for loading from this division are as follows :
Iron Ore for Export, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant & Sponge Iron Plants in Private Sector all from Bailadilla mines.
Imported Coal / Coke for Bhilai, Rourkela & Visakhapatnam Steel Plants.
Petroleum products to A.P., M.P. and Orissa.
Slag & finished products of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant ; and Other Cargo like - Rock Phosphate, Sulphur, Fertilizers , Alluminium Powder, Sugar, Steam Coal for NTPC etc.
Besides the divisional headquarters, the following three important activity centres are located at Visakhapatnam.
Diesel Loco Shed, Waltair is the largest Diesel Shed in Indian Railways .  It houses a total of 198 Diesel Locomotives comprising of  WDM-2 - 57,WDS-6 - 10 ,WDG-3A - 96.WDM 3A 35 AND 3 RAIL BUSES
Electric Loco Shed, Waltair holds about 170 Electric Locomotives WAG-5 - 108 WAM-4 -23, WAG-7 -23 , High Horse Power -  ABB/Sweden - 4, Hitachi/Japan-12.
Divisional Hospital has got a 150 plus bed capacity.
A 20,000 plus strong work-force constitute the back-bone of Waltair Division ,   ensuring safety, security & punctuality in running round-the-clock train services - both passenger and freight.
To meet the aspirations and demands of passengers, the division handles 36 pairs of Mail / Express trains in all and 14 pairs of passenger trains including 2 Diesel Multiple Units (DMU), which run between Palasa and Tuni (via. Visakhapatnam) and Visakhapatnam-Rayagada.
