SIMHACHALAM

Simhachalam temple is located near Visakhapatnam. It is dedicated to the incarnation (Avataram) of Vishnu known as Narasimha (the man-lion). The temple is a mix of Orissan (main/central shrine) and Dravidian (entrance) styles of architecture.

SIGNIFICANCE

SIMHACHALAM TEMPLE
It is one of the eighteen "Naarasimha Kshetras" i.e. shrines of Lord Narasimha in India. Simhachalam temple is known as the second richest temple in India (after Tirupati) earning a revenue of Rs. 520 million. The main deity inside the temple sanctorum gives "nijaroopa darshan" (holy appearance in true form) for only 12 hours in a year i.e. on Akshaya Tritiya day, the rest of the time the deity is covered with Sandalwood paste. The darsanam described as 'Chandana yatra' or 'Chandanotsavam' falls every year in Vaisakha masa (May).

LEGEND

Hiranyakasipu was a Rakshasa king. He was in fact one of Vishnu's Dwarapalakas or gate keepers in Vaikuntha, Jaya and Vijaya. They had to take birth in the mortal world thrice because of a curse given by Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanathana and Sanathkumara, who were not allowed to take darshan of Mahavishnu by them. The other palaka was born as his brother Hiranyaaksha.
Hiranyakasipu wanted to become immortal and hence performed austerities (tapasya) to propitiate Lord Brahma. However, Lord Brahma said that was not possible so Hiranyakasipu asked Lord Brahma to grant him a boon so that he could not be killed by any animal or a man neither in the morning nor in the night, by any weapons, neither in sky nor on the earth.
Hiranyakasipu wanted the entire world to worship him. But, Prahalada, his son, was a devotee of Lord Narayana and always expressed his bhakti towards Him. In spite of warning him several times, Hiranyakasipu could not alter Prahlada's devotion.
This made Hiranyakasipu angry and he made numerous attempts to get Prahlada killed. One of them was to throw him off the top of a mountain. However, Vishnu rescued him by moving the mountain and made a small path for Prahaladha. It is said that in the place where the Lord stood to protect Prahaladha is the place where the temple is built.
The most important thing about this temple is that here we can't see the God's feet. It is said that the feet is buried inside the earth. Lord Narayana came to rescue Parahalada on Garuda and when they threw Parahalada Lord Narayana jumped from Garuda to save him and in this process his feet went deep into the earth.

GOPURAM OF SIMHACHALAM TEMPLE
HISTORY

It has Sri Varahalakshmi Narasimha Swamy as the presiding deity. The deity at Simhachalam, the lion-man incarnation of Lord Mahavishnu is usually covered with sandalwood paste. The original shape of the deity in the tribhanga posture has two hands with the head of a lion on a human torso. An inscription dated as far back as 1098 AD of the Chola King Kuloththunga provides some clue as to its antiquity. Another inscription shows a Queen of the Eastern Ganga of Kalinga (ancient Orissa) (1137-56 AD) covering the image with gold while a third inscription says the eastern Ganga King of Orissa, Narasimha Deva, built the main/central shrine in 1267 A.D. With more than 252 inscriptions in Oriya and Telugu describing the antecedents of the temple, it is a historically important monument.

Sri Krishna Deva Rayalu after defeating the Gajapati ruler of Orissa Gajapati Prataparudra Dev visited the shrine twice in 1516 AD and 1519 AD and offered numerous villages for maintenance of bhogam (worship) along with valuable jewellery of which an emerald necklace is still in the temple. For the last three centuries the royal family of Vizianagaram, "The Pusapati Gajapathi's" have been the temple's trustees. Giripradhikshana (circumambulation) around the hill range (~40 km) from Hanumantha vaka/MVP colony to Simhachalam is done by piligrims during the auspicious days. Crowds of elderly people/youth/children are observed walking the 40 km stretch over night. They visit the temple after the long journey and give their offerings to the deity.

SRIKAKULAM

SRIKAKULAM is a town, municipality and headquarters of Srikakulam district in the north-eastern Andhra Pradesh, India. It is part of Srikakulam Assembly constituency and Srikakulam Parliament Constituency. Srikakulam was formerly called as Gulshanabad (Garden city) during Muslim rule and was headquarter of Muslim fauzdars. It was renamed as Chicacole by British colonial rulers and after independence, it was renamed as Srikakulam.

HISTORY

This region of Andhra Pradesh was part of Kalinga region at first and later a part of Gajapati kingdom of Orissa up to mediaeval period. It was in the 'Bendi Shilpa' ruling in 1687 Srikakulam (Gulshanabad) was a village and formed as fauzdhari-center for their money transactions for the areas of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Vishakhapatnam, and some parts of Orissa. The word Gulshanabad derives from Persian words Shilpa that means Rose garden and Bendi(Bending). It was developed as town in the Muslim ruling, even today you can find more than 10,000 Muslims living in this town following their culture, tradition and values. Srikakulam has also been head quarter for revenue collection under Nizam state of Hyderabad since 1707. Nizams of Hyderabad assigned Gulshanabad (Srikakulam), Rajahmundry, Eluru and Mustafanagar (Kondapalli) districts to French India in 1753. French imperialists were driven out from these districts by British imperialists in 1756 during Anglo-French wars.
In 1759 the Fauzdhari ruling was ended and British ruling started, and Srikakulam town has been made part of Ganjam district and Palakonda and Rajam areas were included in Vizag district in the undivided Madras province. In 1936 the combined Madras-Orissa state was divided to Madras and Orissa and Parlakimidi Taluk was separated from combined Madras state, hence the Srikakulam was remained as Srikaklam taluk, Srikakulam town as Srikakulam municipality since 1857 under British rule. In 1947 after Indian independence, many including Potti Sriramulu fought for separate Andhra State. In 1948 many demanded for Srikakulam district as it was in combined vizag district. First 'chintada' village was proposed as district head-quarter by some central leaders. It was on 17 July 1950, a representation was given by Challa Narasimhu naidu, an eminent leader, Pullela Vemkataramanayya (P.V. Ramanayya), who was an Eminent Advocate and Public Prosecutor and also a Freedom Fighter to the then Revenue Minister H. Sitaramareddy on his visit to this area, and requested to select Srikakulam as District head-quarters at his camp office in Vizianagaram. Minister H. Sitaramareddy personally saw some places in srikakulam for selection. Then MLA of this area Garemalla Kumaraswami gave a speech on the dias of the meeting arranged on honour of the minister indicating that many important towns and capitals in the world were situated on the banks of rivers like England (Thames River), Srirangam (Kaveri), Agra (Yamuna), Kashi (Ganga), Rajamundry (Godavari), Vijayawada (Krishan) etc., and for Srikakulam it is Nagavali and convinced the minister Sitaramareddy. Along with Rokkam Ramamurty, Pullela Venkataramanyya (P.V. Ramanayya), Pasagada Suryanarayana, Baratam Venkataramanayya, Mangu Raghavarao followed Garemella Kumaraswami as group to convince and represent the request memorandum. The minister decided and selected Srikakulam as head-quarters after reaching Madras then state capital. Kimidi Kalavenkatarao ex-revenue minister in the combined Madras state had done a lot for formation of this District, who was the grandfather of present Vunukuru MLA Kalavenkatarao. On 15 August 1950, at about 4.00 p.m. the district was announced with Srikakulam town as headquarters and with three revenue divisions Palakonda, Srikakulam and Tekkali. At first, Parvatipuram revenue division was part of Srikakulam district and later transferred to Vizianagaram district. Mr. Night was the then collector in the combined Vizag Srikakulam and Mr. Janab Shek Ahammadh appointed as first district collector for separated Srikakulam. On 3 January 1951, the first District Board was formed and Rokkam Laxmi Narasimha Dora was elected as president.

VIZIANAGARAM

GANTA STHAMBAM

Vizianagaram is the main city of the Vizianagaram District of north-eastern Andhra Pradesh . Vizianagaram district was formed on 1 June 1979, with some parts carved from the neighbouring districts of Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam. It is, at present, the largest municipality of Andhra Pradesh, in terms of population. It is located about 18 km inland from the Bay of Bengal, and 52 km northeast of Visakhapatnam. The literal meaning of Vizianagaram is the city of victory, it is also sometimes referred to as the city of education. It is an important business and educational center for north coastal Andhra and the adjoining state of Orissa. Vizianagaram is located at 18.12°N 83.42°E. It has an average elevation of 74 metres (242 feet).
History :- This area was ruled by different Hindu emperors of Kalinga (ancient Orissa) up to the mediaeval period. After the fall of the centralized Gajapati empire of Orissa, the region was governed by the Golkonda rulers. The ancestors of the Maharajas of Vizianagaram is stated to be descended from the Ranas of Udaipur, the Sisodia branch of the Guhilot tribe and Vasishta gotra.
Rulers of this princely state belong to the Pusapati family. The village Pooshpadu in Nandigama Taluq was built by Amala Raju. The village later came to be known as Pusapadu. Therefore, the Kshatriyas living there came to be known as Pusapatis.

Sri Pydithalli Ammavaru Temple :- The origin of the Sri Pydithalli Ammavaru temple is associated with the royal family of Vizianagaram. According to local folklore, the goddess (Grama Devata) of the temple is a sister of the Maharaja of Vizianagaram. Sirimanu Panduga Sirimanuis is an important event that is celebrated here in the month of October. The story starts in 1750, when French leader Bussy was staying with his battalion near Hyderabad. In addition to financial problems, many of his soldiers were dying due to a disease (Masuchi). Vijya Rama Raju of Vizianagaram helped him overcome the financial crisis and rebuild his battalion. In 1756, Bussy visited Rajamundry, where Vijaya Rama Raju gave him a warm welcome. The Bobbili Rajas and the Vizianagaram Maharajas were in constant conflict regarding control over the region. Using his good relations with the French, Vijaya Rama Raju set out to gain supremacy over the Northern Circars, leading to the Bobbili battle on January 23, 1757. During the battle, the entire Bobbili fort was destroyed, and many Bobbili soldiers died in the battle.
PYDITALLI AMMAVARU
The wife of Vijaya Rama Raju, as well as his sister Sri Pydimamba, unsuccessfully tried to stop the battle. Sri Pydimamba was suffering from Masuchi as well. While she was performing a puja, she came to know that Vijaya Rama Raju was in trouble, and wanted to convey a message to him through their soldiers, but everyone was in battle. She was able to find one soldier named Patiwada Appala Naidu, but by then, she received news that Vijaya Rama Raju had died in the hands of Tandra Papa Rayudu. She then fell unconscious with grief. Patiwada Appla Naidu sprinkled water over her face, and when she regained consciousness, she told Appala Naidu that she could not live anymore. She is thought to have become one with the Goddess after she died, as after completion of the Bobbili battle and after the Vijayadasimi, on the next Tuesday, an idol was found in the west side of Pedda Charuvu of Vizianagaram. It is known as "Pyidimamaba", the village goddess of Vizianagaram. It is thought that the incident took place in the place in the present-day Railway station, opposite where the temple is constructed. Her statue can be found on the west side of Pedda Cheruvu.
